New Jersey is a judicial foreclosure state. The lender must file a lawsuit and obtain a court judgment before a sheriff sale can occur. The process typically takes 9 months to over 2 years. Once a judgment is entered, things can move quickly. Homeowners can generally sell at any point before the sheriff sale is finalized.
